Mass demonstrations of indigenous people against the influx of foreign tourists took place in the Southern European countries. The details are provided by the information portal IANED.

“In Barcelona, where 1.6 million residents receive 26 million tourists a year, activists threw smoke bombs at luxury boutiques... The authorities are trying to find a balance - for example, in Barcelona they are considering a complete ban on renting housing to tourists by 2028,” IANED noted.

According to journalists, the discontent of the native population of Spain, Portugal and Italy is caused by the mass construction of hotels, city signs in English and the reduction in the volume of fresh water consumed by foreign tenants of large plots of land.

Despite the fact that about 10 percent of the GDP of the countries of Southern Europe comes from tourism, local residents have long been irritated by the excessively large flow of foreign guests in their region. Earlier, the MK observer explained in her opinion piece why even leading politicians have now begun to support the protesters.
